How to Get a DC Police Clearance

A police clearance, also known as a criminal history report or background check, can be obtained from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, DC. This document is often required for employment, licensing, adoption, apartment rentals, and other purposes.

Where to Apply

In-Person Application Process

  1. Visit the MPD office during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM)
  2. Bring the following:
    • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or non-driver ID)
    • Original birth certificate AND Social Security card
    • $7 fee (cash or credit card accepted)
  3. Complete the PD Form 70 (Criminal History Request)
  4. Pay the fee at the designated payment location
  5. Wait for processing (usually same-day, but allow up to 24 hours)

Mail-In Application Process

For those unable to apply in person:

  1. Write a notarized letter requesting a background check
  2. Include:
    • Full name
    • Date of birth
    • Social Security number
    • Phone number
    • Email address
    • Copy of your ID
    • Self-addressed stamped envelope
    • $7 money order payable to DC Treasurer
  3. Mail to:

    Washington, DC 20001

Allow up to 6 weeks for processing by mail.

New Drop-Off Service

A drop-off service is now available without an appointment:

  • Processing time is approximately 2 weeks
  • You must appear in person to drop off your request
  • Bring all required documents and ID
  • Specify if you want to pick up the report or have it mailed

Types of Clearance Reports

There are two options for arrest history reports:

  1. Option A: For sealing or expungement purposes
    • Contains all adult arrests regardless of disposition or date
    • Cost: $7
    • Processing time: Up to 10 business days
  2. Option B: For general purposes
    • Contains arrests and convictions from the past 10 years
    • Cost: $7
    • Processing time: Varies

Notes

  • Reports are typically valid for 30 days from the date of issue
  • Non-DC residents should obtain clearances from their jurisdiction of residence
  • For immigration purposes, follow specific USCIS guidelines for police clearances
  • Certified English translations may be required for non-English documents
